Met Costume Institute Gala 2012: Worst dressed are Beyonce, Kirsten Dunst and ... Liz Taylor?
There were many gowns at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute gala that I really, really wanted to like. January Jones' seamed Versace with mirrored inserts, for example, but I couldn't get behind that shade of yellow. Amy Poehler's laser-cut black mermaid gown was torpedoed by the feathery train. Kristen Stewart wore a sharply-cut sequined bustier -- I would have loved to have seen a full-length version of that. Unfortunately, she paired it with a patchwork leather skirt in red, blue and black patent leather. Why?
But there were many gowns I was happy to hate. Florence Welch's champagne Alexander McQueen was insane -- ungainly tiers and enormous bell sleeves, all covered with feathery tassles. She looked like one of those tissue-paper wedding bells decorations. Sarah Jessica Parker mysteriously paired a long-sleeved, washed-out floral gown seemingly made from 1950s sofa upholstery with Wonder Woman gold bracelets -- the better to deflect fashion criticism? Kirsten Dunst's red double-breasted power suit/gown defied explanation. And who wants to see Gwyneth Paltrow's side cleavage? Christina Ricci's otherwise eye-c! atching black-and-white sheath was slowly being consumed by an enormous pink satin bow. Beyonce's revealing black embroidered gown with fuzzy purple train was like some unholy union of Cher and a Muppet.
If I had to pick the absolute worst dressed, the honor would go to model Coco Rocha. She wore a shiny pink top and loose yellow capris and matching bolero embroidered with sequined paisleys. It was ugly as sin, but at least it had pedigree -- she bought the vintage Givenchy outfit at the Elizabeth Taylor auction.
