Melancholia(M18)

Drama/130 minutes

Rating: ***1/2

The topic of depression is often depicted by those who suffer it in a tone that is anything but depressing.

Trust risk-taking writer-director Lars von Trier to raise the stakes.

The viewer is asked to follow the depressed Justine (Kirsten Dunst) as she rips her life apart on her wedding day.

Dunst delivers the performance of her career as Justine, an advertising genius being married to a wonderful man in a posh manor.

As the movie goes on, largely over the course of the day-long wedding, the rot underneath surfaces.
