Review: Batchelorette

Bachelorette (MA15+) 2.5 stars Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzie Caplan, Rebel Wilson Director: Leslye Hedland You'll like this if you liked: Bad Teacher, Young Adult, Observe and Report It takes a lot to make me laugh out loud in a movie. Bridesmaids tipped me over the edge. So too the upcoming Pitch Perfect thanks to Rebel Wilson's scene-stealing turn as Fat Amy and some hilarious left-field one-liners (the film opens in December). Sadly, however, I was squirming uncomfortably in my seat all the way through Bachelorette, Leslye Headland's debut feature about three girls who are invited to the wedding of a woman they used to ridicule back in high school. Where Bachelorette differs from the runaway hit that was Bridesmaids - a film that proved women are just as adept at writing smart comedy as men - is that the gross-out is just a little too gross, the language a little too crass and the jokes, well, they're frankly just too mean to be funny. Bachelorette is based on H

Dunst is happy to be bridesmaid

Kirsten Dunst stars in dark new indie film Batchelorette. Picture: Contour By Getty Images Source: National Features KIRSTEN Dunst spent her summer going to weddings. "I was a bridesmaid, a maid of honour, went to another wedding ... This was definitely a heavy wedding year for me." As her school friends walked one-by-one down the aisle, the 30-year-old claims to have felt no pressure to get her own marital act together. "Not at all, no. All in the time that it should come," Dunst says. "I'm not worried. When you do worry, when you fixate on those things, that's when it doesn't happen. Like when you hear about couples who adopt a child and then they get pregnant, you know? That kind of psychology. "When you're not thinking about it, that's when it comes your way." So Dunst is happy to remain a bridesmaid - for now, at least - even in her new movie, Bachelorette . Riding a post-Bridesmaids appetite for female-led comedies, Bachel

Kirsten Dunst: Turning 30 was stressful

Kirsten Dunst found turning 30 "stressful". The actress admitted that the milestone birthday freaked her out initially, but added she has since managed to relax and feels as young as ever. The Bachelorette star also revealed that while she would like to have her own family, she doesn't see a husband and children in her immediate future. "Turning 30 was stressful, but I've stopped thinking about it and now I feel exactly how I did at 29. I would like to have kids and get married - one day," she told German magazine TV Spielfilm. Kirsten also spoke about the issue of jealousy in female friendships. In Bachelorette, the star plays a bridesmaid who is annoyed that the girl she used to mock in high school is getting married before her. The blonde beauty insisted that she isn't as mean-spirited as her character. "I think it depends on how happy you are within yourself, what you've been through. I, for one, was very happy when my best friend got engage

'On the Road': Poster art reveal

Image
Jack Kerouacs On the Road is such a seminal, sui generis work of Beat Generation fiction that its taken 55 years since its publication for a feature film adaptation to make its way to movie theaters. Everyone whos read the book has an idea of how the story of two friends on a meandering road trip across America should look. Perhaps the biggest challenge facing director Walter Salles ( The Motorcycle Diaries ) was distillingall those disparate ideas into a single, unified feature film. Then comes an even trickier question: How do you sell it? The Beats werent exactly known for being commercially oriented artists, but when you have a film featuring stars like Kristen Stewart, Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, and Kirsten Dunst, you kinda want to have them on your movie poster. How do you do that without making it seem like a crass play to boost your box office? The design team atPercival & Associates have come up with an elegant solution in the final one sheet for the film, and EW has an

Crashing the bridal party Save

Oct. 20, 2012, 3 a.m. ''I'M ONE piece of a puzzle,'' Kirsten Dunst says. She's not being modest or enigmatic - just matter-of-fact about the way filmmaking works. She is speaking from Greece, where she is in the midst of filming The Two Faces of January , an adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith thriller. Searching for a word, she apologises that her ''brain is at half-mast'' but she's quick, thoughtful and relaxed. Dunst, 30, has made more than 40 movies, moving seamlessly from child performer to teen movie star to romantic-comedy lead to an actor with apparently effortless clarity. Her first movie appearance was an uncredited role, at the age of six, in Woody Allen's segment of New York Stories ; she was Tom Hanks' daughter in The Bonfire of the Vanities ; and Amy in Gillian Armstrong's Little Women . In Interview with the Vampire , at 14, she seemed simultaneously youthful and ageless as a spookily precocious member of the undead,

Kirsten Dunst Won't Date Anyone Similar To Her

Image
WENN.com Kirsten Dunst has admitted that she only goes for guys who are totally different to her, because otherwise it would be like dating "another girlfriend". The actress, who is currently in a relationship with her 'On the Road' co-star Garrett Hedlund, believes opposites attract. She's not interested in men who like the same things as her - she's got her gal pals for that! Though she's pretty coy about dicussing her love life, the 'Spiderman' star did admit that for her, it's all about finding someone with a great personality and and a great aura. "Hypothetically speaking? I like a guy with a good soul who makes me laugh. That's most important," she told Company magazine. "I also think it's very important not to date someone who is too much like yourself. Because that would feel like having another girlfriend and boys and girls are different." Kirsten Dunst believes opposites attract

Kirsten Dunst would never date someone who is too like herself. The actress is currently in a relationship with her On the Road co-star Garrett Hedlund. She has given some hints about what she looks for in a man, insisting it is personality which initially attracts her to someone. Hypothetically speaking I like a guy with a good soul who makes me laugh. Thats most important, she told Company magazine. I also think its very important not to date someone who is too much like yourself. Because that would feel like having another girlfriend and boys and girls are different. Its thought Kirsten and Garrett met while they were shooting the movie, which is based on the famous book by Jack Kerouac. The couple prefer not to be too open about their romance. However, Kirsten is happy to gush about Garretts acting talents. I dont talk about relationship stuff, she insisted, when asked what it was like to fall in love on set. But I will tell you that he is a wonderful actor and was wonderful to wor

Is On The Road a plotless movie?

Despite boasting an all-star cast that includes Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst and Sam Riley, 'On The Road' is not going to appeal to everyone. Based on Jack Kerouac's 'unfilmable' classic novel, it's an essentially plotless road movie more interested in capturing the vibrant mood of the 1940s-50s than providing gripping drama. What's it all about? Sam Riley plays Sal Paradise in the story, an aspiring young writer who falls under the spell of Garett Hedlund's charismatic yet dangerous Dean Moriarty. Feeling a connection to him he's rarely felt with anyone before Sal decides to follow Dean and his partner Marylou, played by Kristen Stewart, on an adventure from New York to California. Garrett Hedlund is Dean Moriarty Garrett Hedlund is electrifying as Dean Moriarty. It's a part that was once sought after by both Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell, but it's hard to imagine anyone being better than him. Your eyes are solely on Hedlun

'Spider-Man 2': Shailene Woodley in talks to portray Mary Jane

The 20-year-old actress could replace Kirsten Dunst as Spidey's love interest in the next chapter of the Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy, according to Variety . Shailene Woodley, revealed last year in Alexander Payne's The Descendants , has just started negotiating with Sony Pictures to join the production. She would play Mary Jane Watson, the girl next door who married Peter Parker in the Marvel comics. If a deal goes through, Shailene Woodley's character would have to fight Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) over Peter Parker's affections in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 . Andrew Garfield will take the title role, under the direction of Marc Webb. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will start production early next year, and the movie is set to hit theaters in May 2014.

Kirsten Dunst: Im too old to go wild

Kirsten Dunst organised a mellow bachelorette party for her friend as she feels too old to go wild. The actress was maid of honour for her best pal Molly when she married recently. She enjoyed the role and thinks she did a good job of organising a party in Mollys honour even though it wasnt the traditional bride-to-be experience. The bachelorette party was very quiet and mellow, just five girls on a beach. OK, we had a mariachi band and held a little barbeque but after you get to a certain age you dont want to do anything too wild, you know what I mean? That just sounds too exhausting, she told Company magazine. The actress turned 30 in April and is getting used to the landmark age. Initially, she was worried about the ageing process but has now stopped fearing it. I was a bit stressed about it but after it had actually happened, I realised that I still felt exactly the same as I had at 29, she said. So nothing much has changed there. I did have a party in the back yard of my moms hou

Review: Stewart, Hedlund and Riley On The Road... to nowhere

Image
Based on the iconic Beat Generation novel by Jack Kerouac, On The Road stars Sam Riley, Kirsten Dunst, Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund in a stream-of-consciousness road trip through forties America, fuelled by sex, drugs and jazz, and populated by free-spirited young beatniks living art which imitates life which imitates art... I have this personal policy where if a film is based on a book I will not watch it until Ive read that book, and recent examples like One Day , Never Let Me Go , Precious and The Hunger Games , solidify that belief: books are, in my opinion, far better than their translations onto the big screen (although the latter two titles did give it a good go). On rare occasion, however, I have gone to watch a film when I havent read the book or play and have actually thoroughly enjoyed it; my most recent experience of this being Anna Karenina . So when I was given the chance to see On the Road I thought Id be fine without doing the homework. Oh how wrong I was... T

How divas were lost in Hollywood history

What ever happened to Kirsten Dunst? The American actress's recent screen career underlines how difficult it is to be a movie star in a digital world. Two of her most recent films, the raucous comedy-drama Bachelorette and Lars von Trier's apocalyptic Melancholia were released first on VOD (video-on-demand) in the US. It is fitting, although not very flattering to her, that Bachelorette should have become a No. 1 hit on iTunes at just the time that Robert Aldrich's caustic thriller What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? (1962) is being revived. (Marking its 50th anniversary, Aldrich's classic is being shown in a restored print at the London Film Festival this month.) "Women old enough to know better act like horny sailors on leave, absorb mass quantities of alcohol and drugs, and generally behave horribly," complained USA Today about Bachelorette. The more serious problem for Dunst, though, is that when your movies are watched first on laptops and TVs rather than in

Kirsten on her life in front of the lens

New role: Kirsten Dunst as Camille and Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty in On The. Source: Supplied HER short life could form the script of a Hollywood film but Kirsten Dunst is over the drama. She's been behind a camera lens since the age of three, kissed Brad Pitt when she was 12, dated a string of co-stars, battled depression and hit 30. So now she's ready for some laughs. Bring on Bachelorette, a comedy in which Dunst stars opposite two Australians, Isla Fisher and Rebel Wilson. With an enviable CV, Dunst began acting at age six with a minor part in Woody Allen's New York Stories. She landed her first notable role six years later in Interview With The Vampire, in which she famously kissed Pitt. "I choose what I love no matter how much money I make," Dunst tells Insider. "After Melancholia, I didn't want to do another dramatic film. I didn't want to become the girl who would then be cast as a weirdo. I wanted to do a comedy, and Bachelorette cam
